Gunner Kiel not traveling to Hawaii Bowl (UPDATED)

UPDATE (Dec. 17 8 p.m. ET)

Gunner Kiel won't make the trip to the Hawaii Bowl vs. San Diego State.

The quarterback is dealing with a personal issue per the school. He hasn't been practicing throughout the week with the team for its bowl practices.

"Gunner is taking care of personal problems," Cincinnati coach Tommy Tuberville said via Cincinnati.com. "He's asked if we can kind of recognize his privacy. He's not off the team. He'll be back. I don't know when, but he'll be back. That's pretty much all I can say about it."

Kiel, a junior, began the season as Cincinnati's starting quarterback but has missed time. He suffered a brutal hit against Memphis and was taken off the field against the Tigers. He was out for the team's next two games because the team said doctors didn't clear him from a neck injury suffered from the hit.

He was replaced against Memphis by Hayden Moore, who will start the Hawaii Bowl. Kiel is 206-316 for 2,777 yards, 19 touchdowns and 11 interceptions in 2015. Moore has thrown for 1,683 yards this season to go with nine touchdowns and eight interceptions. He set a single-game passing record for the Bearcats after he came in for Kiel vs. Memphis.

Kiel started his career as a Notre Dame commit. He transferred to Cincinnati and has been the Bearcats' starting quarterback for the past two seasons. He was the No. 1 pro-style quarterback and the No. 20 prospect in the country in the class of 2012 according to Rivals.
